Review: Lenny & Lucy

Lenny & Lucy Lenny & Lucy by Philip C. Stead
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Peter and his dog Harold move to a new house with scary woods. So Peter creates guardians of the bridge--Lenny and Lucy--to watch out for anything scary.

This picturebook is breathtaking. Pencil illustrations create both a sense of danger and a sense of warmth. The pops of color add to the contrast of danger and safety, while highlighting the characterization and importance of friendship between both animate and inanimate object.
The detail of every aspect of each page brings together a story of great depth and friendship.

The first true stand out Caldecott contender of 2016.
