Review: Red Queen

Red Queen Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really did enjoy this book, this world and the characters laid out here.

However, it is one of the most derivative books I have every read. Instead of being submersed in the story, I kept thinking "oh, that subplot is exactly like Cinder and this situation is exactly like this other one from Throne of Glass.

After seeing some other reviews that the concepts in this book are similar to Red Rising, I started reading that and the similarities are glaring, but the character development considerable less nuianced.

Indeed, I enjoyed Red Queen and will read the rest in the series because I did enjoy it, but I would never suggest that this novel is "original" with any organic character development. Often the characters' emotions and conclusions feel stilted and unconnected.

The twist got me. I was not expecting that.

Conclusion: I look forward to seeing how this author develops from her debut. Clearly she has promise, but it would not hurt to start reading her books until after she has more experience.
