Review: It's Not Easy Being Number Three

It's Not Easy Being Number Three It's Not Easy Being Number Three by Drew Dernavich
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Number three was bored, so he tried to be a whole bunch of different things.

This book started out slow, then "3" turned into all of these great "search and finds" and I found that truly engaging. Then Three became a statue and the story took a weird, uninteresting turn. There was just too many holes and tangents in this picturebook for it really to feel cohesive. The scratchboard illustrations are stunning combined with the digital alterations, but coupled with the tangents in the story, the scratchboard does not offer enough dynamism to the illustrations to really make it push forward to the end.
