Review: Grumpy Pants

Grumpy Pants Grumpy Pants by Claire Messer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Penguin was grumpy, and only a new day could change that.

With only muted yellow, red, blue and teal, this picturebook follows Penguin as he tries to shake off his bad day. In what appears to be woodcuts (though I suspect is actually digital illustration), the spot illustrations on each page allow for plenty of white space. The turning point in the story is a splashy double-page spread where Penguin jumps into the bath. From there his mood starts to improve greatly. A well-designed book.
